Getting Disability Insurance
if You Work in the Medical
Industry
One of the
perks of joining the Ontario
Medical Association (OMA) is
the ability to purchase this
organization’s disability
insurance. All members of
the OMA, doctors, surgeons
and physicians can join this
organization. Once they have
done this, they will have
access to several disability
insurance plans.
Physicians and Surgeons
With OMA, doctors and
surgeons will be able to
purchase one of two types of
disability insurance. The
first is disability income
insurance that replaces the
insured’s income if there is
a disability. The other
type, disability income
insurance – high income,
increases the amount that
people in the medical
profession will receive in
the event of a disability.
The first type offers the
insured $15,000 each month,
but by purchasing the high
income policy, the insureds
and their families receive
$20,000 per month.
Chiropractors
Chiropractors will find
disability insurance
tailored just for their
needs from insurance
companies that also sell
their professional liability
insurance policies. They can
purchase a policy that will
protect them in the event
that they are too injured to
work. If they have
contracted an illness and
need a significant amount of
time to recover, they will
also receive monthly payment
during this time.
Dentists
Members of the Canadian
Dental Association will have
access to the Canadian
Dental Services Plans, Inc.
(CDSPI), an insurance plan
owned by the association.
The CDSPI administers
long-term disability
insurance plans geared
toward the needs of
dentists. These plans offer
dentists what the other
medical professionals
receive from their long-term
disability plans, but also
includes coverage if a
dentist were to contract HIV
or Hepatitis B or C without
charging extra.
Dental Hygienists
Dental Hygienists have their
own organization, called the
Canadian Dental Hygienists
Association (CDHA). When
dental hygienists join the
CDHA, one of the options
they will have is purchasing
long-term disability
insurance under the Canadian
Dental Hygienists
Association Insurance Plan.
To be eligible for these
plans, Dental Hygienists
must be members of the
association, have a
permanent residence in
Canada, be under the age of
65 and work at least 18
hours per week.
Veterinarians
By becoming a member of the
Canadian Veterinary Medical
Association, Veterinarians
have someplace where they
can purchase long-term
disability insurance for
more competitive prices than
they will receive from
individual plans. Canadian
Veterinarians are free to
apply to join the
organization, and after they
have done so, they may
receive a 10 percent
discount off of their
insurance premiums.
